She became an overnight sensation with this song that launched her music career. Sweet melody, exotic locales and a youthful Raageshwari – we still love and miss every bit of this song! Encore?
2) Shaan & Sagarika – Aisa Hota Hai:
An epic musical battle between two siblings – Shaan and Sagarika – and their back and forth on 90’s pop culture induced differences. At the end they do confess their love for each other. After all, kabhi kabhi pyar mein, aisa hota hai. No wonder this awesome song turned both of them into pop sensations!
3) Colonial Cousins – Sa Ni Dha Pa
The coolest coupling possible – a Hindustani classical genius (Hariharan) and another Western music expert (Leslie Lewis) – Colonial Cousins was their flagship album together, and this song the beacon of their musical journey.
4) Bombay Vikings – Kya Surat Hai
Few today would know that popular Bollywood singer Neeraj Shridhar founded the band Bombay Vikings in 1994 and launched this song in 1999. The catchy tune caught on like crazy, and soon there was no one who get enough of this classic, old Hindi song remix. Our view on this song – no one so saaaxy, in the whole galaaaaxy 😉
5) Bally Sagoo – Gur Naal Ishq Mitha
This one’s a classic. It’s probably the most classic indie pop song we’ve ever had. It’s still played at every wedding. Bally Sagoo revolutionized Indian music with his UK beats, and this song still stands as the epitome of that revolution. Also, having Malaika Arora Khan star in the music video only helped!
6) Lucky Ali – O Sanam
His first indie pop song, and what a song it was! Turning Lucky Ali into a celebrity immediately, O Sanam still holds a special place in our hearts, with a still very hummable signature tune!
7) Silk Route – Dooba Dooba Rehta Hoon
Another source and origin of a blockbuster Bollywood playback singer – Mohit Chauhan. He started his career with the band Silk Route, and this song was good enough to go down in musical history books. It still sounds so refreshing, maybe because the video was shot underwater! 😉
8) Ila Arun – Nigodi Kaisi Jawani Hai
You might know her now for more mature roles like Maham Anga in Jodhaa-Akbar, but Ila Arun has had her share of fun in her heydays! This song became a rage and its quirky video featuring a maid jealously eyeing a modelling photoshoot – a classic.
9) AR Rahman – Maa Tujhe Salam
Part of musical maestro AR Rahman’s album Vande Mataram, which is the largest selling Indian non-film album till date, Maa Tujhe Salam became our second national anthem. The song and video instilled a great sense of patriotism back then, and still continues to do so in an unparalleled way!

And how can we forget the most played, most popular and still the most memorable indie pop song of the 90s – Made In India!
