Bollywood Actors Who Crossed Over From Films To TV

As the ever so enlightened Sonam Kapoor puts it: “You can’t consider television an idiot box anymore!”

We concur, Ms. Kapoor, because the lines between film and TV have definitely been blurred, what with the biggest film actors now fighting for TRPs.  Here are some examples of celebrities that stepped out of the big screen, and into the small screens that adorn our houses:

Anupam Kher & Manisha Koirala – Broadcasted on Zee TV, their game show ‘Sawaal Dus Crore Ka’ was the least successful of the Who Wants To Be A Millionaire wannabes, back in the early 00s.

GovindaChappar Phaad Ke – Despite rewarding prize money beyond five crores back in 2000 and 2001, the show failed to charm audiences like the exceedingly popular KBC.

Priyanka ChopraKhatron Ke Khiladi – In 2010, she cracked the whip on contestants, performed her own stunts and was determined to give previous season’s host, Akshay Kumar, a run for his money.

Abhishek Bachchan – A surprise hit that struck gold because of several celebrity guest appearances and exciting campaigns, AB Jr’s National Bingo Night managed to even beat some of the top TV shows when it came to ratings.

Arshad Warsi – While he has hosted shows such as Zara Nach Ke Dikha and Bigg Boss Season 1, Circuit Warsi’s most popular show was Star Gold’s Sabse Favourite Kaun.

Genelia D’Souza – Deshmukh hosted Big Switch on Bindass, a show where rich, spoilt kids went through an extreme lifestyle change.

Amrita Rao – After charming young minds into the idea of arranged marriage in Vivah, Amrita Rao was seen donning the judge’s hat in a reality show called The Perfect Bride. Also known as the after- effects of working in a Rajshri

Sushmita Sen – More dance, more fun and lastly, loads of left feet. Co-hosted with Wasim Akram, most of us did not know when Ek Khiladi Ek Haseena started and when its final innings were.

Shilpa Shetty – Winner of the UK version of Bigg Boss, host of the desi version, judge on Nach Baliye 5 & 6 and owner of the IPL Team Rajasthan Royals, Shilpa Shetty may never have conquered the silver screen, but when it came to TV, it was simply ‘Halla Bol’.

Rani MukherjiDance Premier League – Judged by the Queen Bee of Bollywood and ace choreographer Shiamak Davar, DPL was given the herculean task of replacing Boogie Woogie for Sony TV, which inevitably was a recipe for dance disaster.

Soha Ali Khan – She made her small screen debut with a game show called Godrej Khelo Jeeto Jiyo, where 3 family pairs compete through a gauntlet of entertaining rounds of games and activities that test their compatibility, teamwork and lifestyle awareness. Javed Jaffrey would’ve been better no?

Hrithik Roshan – The dancing super hunk judged Just Dance along with Vaibhavi Merchant and Farah Khan, which easily managed to garner the highest TRPs of any reality show in Our verdict – ‘Just Come Back!’

Farhan Akhtar – One of the most quirky and entertaining talk shows of the last decade, Oye! It’s Friday was made up of special performances by dancers and singers, sketches and light-hearted comedy. And of course, Farhan Akhtar’s impeccable comic sense.

Salman Khan – Whether it’s one of the longest running game shows or the world’s most watched reality show, Bigg Boss has attained cult status because of the Dabangg superstar’s inimitable charisma. Kamal Karte Ho Pandey Ji!!

Akshay Kumar –From grand entrances to gravity-defying daredevilry to dancing on aerial beams, Khiladi Kumar has provided us with enough kicks beating even Sallu when it comes to the ultimate adrenaline rush. No wonder he nailed his stint as the host of Khatron Ke Khiladi.

Madhuri Dixit – While we admit she is THE perfect judge for Jhalak Dikha Jaa, her actual TV debut was in an incredibly boring show called Kahin Na Kahin Koi Hain, an arranged marriage setting broadcasted on national television. Did we mention that prospective bride and grooms had to talk in private on giant swings?

Shahrukh Khan – Barring the disastrous Zor Ka Jhatka, SRK’s two most famous TV stints were Kya Aap Pachwi Paas Se Tez Hain? & KBC (2007). And the latter wasn’t as bad as people made it out to be.

Amitabh Bachchan  – KBC literally face-lifted if not revived the career of living legend, Amitabh Bachchan. From the very first promo back in 2000, we knew that something sophisticated and monumental was in strore for us. 14 years later, we still feel the same way every time we switch our TVs on at 8:30 pm, sharp.

And again as the fashionista says, “…in a lot of ways, everybody is sitting and watching TV”. Agreed, but when are YOU jumping on the bandwagon, Ms. Kapoor? 😉 To watch these celebs do their thing on film and TV alike, log on to ErosNow!
