Jimmy Shergill’s start in Bollywood was a little shaky, but the man has finally arrived and is here to stay. You disagree? Well, as he turned 45 yesterday, let’s give you a breakdown of Jasjit Singh Gill’s filmy journey – from “Jimmy, who?” to “Jimmy matlab Awasthi ji?”
It all started in 1996 with Maachis. Jimmy played Jaimal Singh and got noticed by everyone.
His boy-next-door charm was enough to make girls swoon and his solid acting chops impressed critics. Win-win!
Things didn’t quite go as planned after Maachis and Jimmy ended up being written off as a one-hit wonder. All that changed in 2000, when he returned as the love-struck Karan in Mohabbatein.
This role was unlike anything Jimmy had done before, but it again played on his boyish charm.
After a string of flops, where we witnessed him in regular lover boy roles, a major turning point came in his career in 2003 in the form of Haasil.
(Yes, he did play a lover boy again but we got to see a side of the man we’d never seen before. And it was amazing!)
By now, Jimmy had realised that character roles are his true strength and he played on this with absolute perfection. His portrayal of Zaheer in Munna Bhai M.B.B.S. won our hearts and earned him a fair bit of attention.
He was seen in a character role in Lage Raho Munna Bhai as well, and it was again a delight to see Jimmy play Victor D’Souza.
The man was awarded the title of Best Actor at the 11th Norway Bollywood Film Festival in Oslo for Saheb, Biwi Aur Gangster Returns. Need we say more?
This is Jimmy Shergill’s latest avatar and also one of his most memorable. The man’s accent, style and dialogue have gathered a cult following.
