This weekend saw the release of Raman Raghav 2.0 from notorious director Anurag Kashyap. The film is a sordid tale of a serial killer and a corrupt cop at loggerheads with plenty of macabre violence. With audiences developing a taste for darker and grittier films, we decided to highlight 5 recent movies that will satisfy your craving.
Most of Kashyap’s filmography can fit into this genre but we pick this one film as the ugliest of the lot. A tale of how a child’s kidnapping reveals the darkness in the adults around her, it is quite an upsetting watch.
Varun Dhawan shocked everyone with his portrayal of a middle-aged man who goes to unspeakable lengths to avenge his family. It is a story of how trauma can affect even a sane person to lose sense of what’s right. Nawazuddin Siddiqui is great as the villain.
Acclaimed director Dibakar Banerjee tells three interconnected stories from different aspects of society that gradually reveal the twisted nature of the world around them. The extremely realistic style of the film makes it even more hard hitting.
7 Khoon Maaf
This Priyanka Chopra-starrer deserves a second look. About a woman who is repeatedly unlucky in love and ends up killing her husbands to free herself of their pain, it has PC playing one of her most dark and difficult characters.
Ek Hasina Thi
This film from director Sriram Raghavan of Badlapur fame stars Saif Ali Khan as a suave businessman who seduces and then betrays Urmila Matondkar. After facing innumerable horrors, she decides to repay him in kind.
